INTRODUCTION
The genetics revolution is changing the world, and the gap between developed and developing countries in this field seems to be growing. The decodification of the human genome is opening broad avenues for research and development, and genomics will certainly change the medical science very deep and very soon. Short courses of medical and human genetics to young students and professionals are already a tradition in North America and Europe. Young researchers and professionals of Latin America should also be prepared to deal with the growing challenge of the genomic medicine. Since 2005, the Latin American School of Human and Medical Genetics is organizing annual courses, one week long, involving around 110 persons (75 students from almost all Latin American countries, 25 faculty members from Latin America, North America and Europe and 10 people of the organizing staff). Due to the extremely positive evaluation of this activity by students and speakers, we are now organizing the IV Course
AIMS
To promote a “state of the art” course of Medical Genetics, exposing during almost one week a selected number of top-grade students with first rank researchers in the field. In addition to attend to strong teaching program, the students will have the unique opportunity of discussing projects, techniques, clinical cases and scientific issues with the faculty members. The participation of students and faculty members from several Latin American countries will stimulate further cooperation between groups inside the continent. It is expected that new links would be created and new opportunities would be opened.
TARGET AUDIENCE
PhD students and post-docs of the biomedical area, and young MDs interested in the field of medical genetics. The students will be selected on the basis of a broad participation of Latin American countries and on a top-grade performance according to academic records and CVs.
FACULTY
Top rank scientists from Latin America and from developed countries will be invited to address lectures and courses. The possibility of staying at the course site all the period will be an important point, as the informal contact between students and faculty is one of the major goals of this initiative.
FINANCIAL ASPECTS
The organizers will apply to governmental organizations, research funding agencies and companies in order to obtain financial support for the expenses with the faculty (transportation, accommodation and meals) and to grant fellowships to cover expenses with accommodation and meals for the students selected for the course. The organizers will also encourage national agencies of Latin American countries to grant fellowships to cover expenses of the students.
